About The Author
Dr. Forgey is engaged in the full time practice of family medicine in Merrillville, Indiana, and the Medical Director of Lake County Indiana Jail. He is a consultant for many outdoor programs, camps, and expeditions.
A member of the Board of Trustees of the International Association for Medical Assistance to Travelers (IAMAT), Dr. Forgey is a Fellow of the Explorer's Club, a lecturer on medical care in high risk recreation at several universities, and a leader of many expeditions into Northern Canada, both summer and winter. A former U.S. Army Captain in the Infantry, he spent more than 30-months on active duty in Vietnam prior to leaving the service and attending medical school at Indiana University. He was awarded the Bronze Star and Army Commendation Medal for his service in Vietnam. He worked 6 years full time as an Emergency Room physician and director of the Ross Clinic Emergency Services in Merrillville, Indiana, before starting his practice of family medicine. Dr. Forgey has served as a Scoutmaster for three BSA troops and as a Medical Explorer Post and High Adventure Explorer Post Advisor. He currently serves on the National Health and Safety Committee and as an Advisory Board Member for the Northern Tier High Adventure Base for the Boy Scouts of America. He is the national consultant for the Student Conservation Association and many other nonprofit organizations. He was named as one of America’s 20 greatest living explorers by the Explorers Club in New York City and, as such, had a camp named for him at the National Boy Scout Jamboree in 2005.
